Historypin and Google Bring Location-Based Photo History to Your Phone
If a picture says a thousand words, Historypin wants to tell the story of human history using photos. Previously accessible only through the Internet, today Historypin has launched an Android-only app to discover windows into the past by seeing and interacting with the history all around you, whenever, wherever.
Historypin, from its site:
“Is a way for millions of people to come together, from across different generations, cultures and places, to share small glimpses of the past and to build up the huge story of human history. Each of these pieces of history finds a home on Historypin, where everyone has the chance to see it, add to it, learn from it, debate it and use it to build up a more complete understanding of the world.”
The new, official, Android-only Historypin app, reveals photos near your current location and allows you to view them layered over the modern scene in front of you. You can also explore collections of some of the best old photos from around the world, wherever you are.
Created in partnership with Google, Historypin for Android features:
- You can add your own piece of history and pin it to the map, too, by using your phone to digitise an old photo, capture a modern moment of historic importance, or take a modern replica of a photo on the app.
- Shaking your phone will bring up some of the best photos from all over the globe.

Historypin is a splendid service, made even more enjoyable with the launch of their Android app.
Pick up the app here and begin pinning history all around the world!
